To work or not to work...?

Question

Anyone out there with a great career that you're considering giving up to be with your baby? The thought of leaving my baby with a stranger gives me so much anxiety. Though, leaving a job I worked hard for to stay home is also difficult. My baby is more important than any job, but who knows where I'd have to start once I'm ready to re-enter the workforce. Even with a graduate level education it's still hard to get in anywhere as a new hire at the level I would want. Anyone else struggling?

Yup, I'm a freelancer who works on tv... I'm going to have to break my contract when she comes and they will have to replace me mid season.... Don't think I'll get my old in back ever which is a huge bummer.

I'm in this same position. We have a 2 year old now and baby due feb 16th. I'm not sure I want to give up my career to stay at home but have had so many struggles with finding solid babysitting with someone I trust and I can't imagine having to go through that with 2 kids! I'm Lucky we could afford it but would definitely be a big lifestyle change! I'm leaning towards staying at home though... You will never get these years back with your baby!

I'm trying to put in a balance work vs. Family. Life is too short... is it worth it to work so hard leaving your babies with someone else to replace you? This is sad.

See if you can go part time so you can transition back into the work force easily when you are ready for full time.

I'm a pharmacist and I'd love to quit and stay home with baby but I make twice as much as my husband and we both have student loans and we're buying a house so it's not financially realistic for me.

I am currently a sahm. It isn't easy for us because we have some weeks where we are strapped on cash. I have a 6yr old that goes to school so that makes it easier. With my daughter I had to quit my job at 28wks due to complications. We got pregnant right away after my daughter came(unplanned) lol so I'm definitely staying home. Hubby is SO against anyone else watching his children. But it just means 2 jobs for him until he finds a good one.

I'm a FTM and not sure what the exact plans will be when my child arrived in August. I do know I have always worked in fast-paced startups and found it difficult to figure out how to start a family working 80 hours a week. In the middle of last year I got recruited to work at a great company that is 100% virtual (as in all employees work remotely and we don't even have an office), with the most amazing benefits I've ever received.

I just found out I got pregnant a few weeks who (almost 8 weeks now) and I'm tentatively thinking of getting an Au Pair who I can keep an eye on occasionally as it will be a more affordable option than a nanny. This seems to make the most sense for someone who works from home full time, as I don't have any family nearby who could help more than a few hours here and there. Anyone have experience with hosting an Au Pair?

I am. I'm a child psychologist with a doctoral degree and I've been self-employed for several years. As it turns out, to complicate matters, a couple of months after our baby comes we will be moving for my husband's job. So, I have to close my practice, pull out of work, then move to a state where I'm not even licensed to practice!!  Financially, it won't make sense for me to stay home permanently, but the thought of finding childcare for a tiny baby in a new place scares the crap out of me. I think once I get is all settled into our new state, I'll get re-licensed and look for part-time work?

I'm having that same struggle! I work at a hospital so I get great health benefits, my husband is having a really hard time letting go of them so I can just be home with my baby! Also I'm not sure that financially we can afford me not working full time. I grew up with my mom not working and he grew up with his mom working full time so it's a constant battle as to what will happen when our little boy arrives. So stressful I wish I had some solution!!

I have no choice e but to leave my job!! I'm a rope hand for a tree service and there's way too much risk.  Even though I unknowingly did it for my entire first trimester!! :( I love my job.  Hard to give up but worth it!!
