Age Kid Can Walk Home from School

What age would you let your child start walking home from school and be at home for a few hours (2 or less maybe) by themselves while you are at work?

Just wondering what age that would start at..

Its is a good/quiet neighborhood and its like 2 blocks away if that..

I personally never would. If a parent can pick a child up its always safer. In my area that is the main way pedophiles pick up kids. They wait for school to get out and follow kids walking home.

You have to check the laws in your area. A lot of states say kids can't legally be left home alone until they're around age 12.As a teacher, I wouldn't recommend letting kids walk home on their own until they're in middle school. Even middle schoolers have a lot of problems walking home. I can't tell you how many times we had problems with predators, fights/bullying, and had kids hit by cars while crossing the street. Not too mention, a lot of kids make bad decisions when left unsupervised for long or frequent periods of time. My advice is to look into an after school program at the school, the YMCA, or Boys & Girls Club. Not only is it safer, but they often provide snacks, structured activities, homework help, and good role models who say as "counselors" to interact with your child. They're usually pretty cheap and some provide fee waivers or free of cost.

My daughter is 6 and very mature she walks from the bus stop home for me because I'm on bed rest well she runs home lol..As far as home alone I wouldn't feel comfortable till she's 12-13 years old..

My boys are almost 9 and they started walking or riding their bikes to school this year. If the weather is bad I still take them, but we live on base and all the kids group together as they walk so it's not a big deal. If we lived off base I'd either walk them or drive them myself. And I won't let them stay home alone for a good few more years yet.... I think the age in CA is 10 to legally be left home for an hour or two, but that still seems to young to me.

Never! I'm extremely paranoid I'd worry the entire time, I used to get anxious when I walked home in high school. Maybe when she's in high school  before she old enough to  get a car she can walk from the bus stop to our house.

My son is almost 7. He is more mature than most 12 year old. He's perfectly capable of walking to and from the bus stop that's legit 4 houses down. But I still say NO. quiet street or not I just don't feel safe.

Well depending on where you leave a kid can only be left home alone if they are 12 and over according to the law.
