Period Controversy

Question for everyone. I have to get testing done and need to get bloodwork on the 3rd day of my cycle. 
People have been telling me different things about when the cycle starts though so now it seems day 1 is a bit of a controversy! Is it the day you start spotting or the day you start bleeding? 
If any of you ladies never spotted a day or two before needing a pad or tampon... Lucky you!!
