The Consent Talk

Samantha
It's terrible how common rape is. I remember Freshman year of high school overhearing my friends make plans to go to a party. My one friend asked the other what to wear. She said "wear jeans, it's harder to access" and my friend who asked said "true" and brushed it off as a normal comment and continued talking about the party and other things and it has stuck with me all these years how okay it was that my friends, as freshmen in high school have to take precautions against rape when they go to a party. Why is this okay? Why is this normal? Why can't two girls go to a party without having to worry about getting raped? Why do girls have to worry whenever they go out? We have to take precautions, we have to make sure we are safe... Why should we have to worry? We should just be safe. Instead of teaching our daughters how to defend against rape we should also teach our sons not to rape. It should be talked about in schools, it should be talked about parent to child. Just like the sex talk the consent talk should become a thing. I'm not saying only boys rape, both genders should learn their states title 9 laws, learn what proper consent is, how to get it and how to give it. They should be taught that saying no when you mean no is okay. Why is this not socially acceptable? Why is it taboo to talk about?
