I had a preemie and he's had a pacifier since day one. He now does well with latching, bottles, and his pacifier. But you have to find the one that the baby will do best with. The ones I wanted him to have don't fit in his mouth and he constantly drops them. So they will choose which work best. But all of the nurses nowadays promote the use of pacifiers cuz 1, it's calming for the baby, babies need to suck. 2, it helps the mouth muscles form which will later help with speech development. And 3, it keeps their airways more open which is apparently known to reduce sids risk. This is just everything I have been learning from all the doctors and nurses that have taken care of my son. So if they may be ready for a pacifier I would say definitely do it!

My son is 5 weeks today. I started giving him a pacifier a week ago but he's had a good latch for awhile. We gave him one at 2 weeks and I had difficulties getting him to latch after that.

You can try and if he has trouble latching just take it away and try later.
