Spit up

Amanda
My first child hardly ever spit up, so I'm not sure if it just seems like a lot by comparison, but I feel like my daughter spits up a lot. I can't remember a time where she hasn't spit up at least a little after a feeding. The doctor doesn't seem concerned bc she's gaining weight and she doesn't seem bothered by it when it happens. But I just don't think it can be good for her to spit up that much. I sit her mostly upright to eat and for at least 10 minutes after she finishes, and I burp her after every 2 or 3 ounces. We tried the formula that is supposed to help reduce spit up but I didn't notice any improvement and it seemed to make her constipated. Does anyone have any suggestions to help reduce the spit up?

Our pediatrician said it was very normal. There is a "valve" at the bottom of our esophagus that helps keep food down, it takes awhile for it to start working for babies so they spit up (I realize this was a very bad explanation and probably sounds dumb but I don't remember the technical terms and I'm tired lol). Also, some babies don't stop eating when they're full so it's just overflow. As long as it doesn't bother her, and it isn't projectile, I wouldn't worry about it. My LO had reflux and when he spit up he would scream and scream and arch his back. The pediatrician also told us that when a baby spits up it looks like more than it actually is.

This is a perfect explanation! I can keep my little man upright for 30 minutes or more after a bottle but he'll still bring up some milk an hour after that if it's just one of those days!

It's normal. Our ped says it's a laundry problem, not a medical problem if they are not bothered by it and gaining weight.

My son has acid reflux and we tried so much before we actually were "diagnosed" with it. We had tried to switch to the spit up formula as well and it seemed to mess with his stomach. Might be a different one than you're thinking. We tried the Gentlease and are now using Enfamil A.R (it has rice added in).  It has helped greatly, but we are also on medicine.  I'd continue to have the baby sit upright after the bottle.  I noticed with my boy that he spit up more when I tried to burp ever few ounces. Now I wait until the end and get a few nice dry burps, but ever baby is different! If they are gaining weight and your dr isn't concerned then I would just continue to monitor it? My doctor said he went by the amount of spit up, how many times we had to change his clothes each day because of the spit up, and the other classic symptoms (arching back, crying, grunting, etc.) Good luck, hope it only improves!!

My first son spit up all the time and a lot. He eventually grew out of it. It's very normal for babies to spit up because their valve isn't mature. As long as they are gaining weight fine I wouldn't worry it will stop soon enough.

Could possibly have acid reflux or I think it's called silent reflux. My son spit up a lot until I put some oatmeal in his milk, and it has reduced greatly.
