California and bonding time ???

Hey everyone. I was wondering if any of you people from Cali has ever went and got bonding time after maturity leave? And if so did you get paid for bonding time or is it just job security so they keep you as a employe? My SO wants me to try and get it but wasn't sure if we can afford me not working.

In California I know we get 55% of our income from EDD for "family leave" even if your company isn't big enough for FMLA. They call that "for time off work to bond with a new born or to care for a sick relative" you have to apply for it before you take the time off I think. More can be found on EDD's website. All I'm spewing is from the posters at my work lol!

It depends on where you work. CA has a paid leave program through CA SDI but not all employers and employees qualify. For example I don't because my job does not pay into CA SDI 😭. How much you get depends on how much money you made at your job. They have charts and all.

As for job protection that is through FMLA and CA state law but your company has to be covered by FMLA and you have to have worked at least 1250 hours in the year to qualify

I work for an FMLA/STD(Short term disability) company and we also handle state leaves as well. I may even work for the company that handles your employers FMLA leaves! Haha but anyway, you get 12 weeks of FMLA which is unpaid, that's just your job protection, then you get 6-8 weeks (depending on delivery method) for short term disability (as long as your employer has an STD policy) and that's what pays you after delivery. In addition to that, your employer may have additional leave policies, and I know the state of CA also has maternity leaves as well (I believe the available time you can take is anywhere up to 4 months in addition). Typically, you'll want to exhaust your 12 months of FMLA first, and then from there the other CA leave laws will come into affect giving you additional time on top of the 12 weeks.

Do you know if your employer has their FMLA administered by an insurance company?

I'm not sure if you've delivered or not, but if you do have a short term disability policy through work, then typically you'd get 6 weeks of pay for a vaginal delivery, and 8 weeks of pay if you had a cesarean.
