Would you vouch for a friend?

My husband has this friend from college he used to be close to. Today my husband got a message from this guy's sister. Apparently he was arrested and pled guilty to an "Internet crime" and they want his friends to send in letters of character to the judge who will do the sentencing. We know absolutely NO details to what "Internet crime" he committed. I told my husband to find out what it was that he did before vouching for him. What if he did something really awful? I wouldn't want my name associated with it. What would you do?

Semi unrelated but i had a "friend" who was arrested for domestic violence for pushing and slapping his gf at the time. His mom asked menfor a character reference and i refused. She forged a typed letter and then signed my name! Little did she know her sons lawyer called to verify and I told him I never wrote it. I will never vouch for anyone who breaks the law.

"Internet crime" could be a federal offense, use of a credit card online that didn't belong to him, or child porn. I wouldn't write a letter when I didn't know what was going on. And frankly, I'd want the police report, not his mother's or friend's watered down version of what they want you to know.

What needs to be in this letter? I'm assuming character reference would be a letter talking about his character..  So do just that. It's not asking you to lie, it wants to know what kind of person he is. I'd write the letter and I'd do just that, I'd talk about my relationship with the person and what he's like when I'm with him. You can't look at it as "helping" him..  Look at it as it's trying to give the court a better idea of what he's like. It could even end up hurting his case if you felt he was a shady character and you wrote that in your letter. Just be honest.

I don't think you need the details of the crime. If you're writing a character reference, you're required to write about the person you know. 
Ofcourse it could change your opinion but if you want to write an honest reference, you simply write about what you know.
