What is the best credit card for starters or college students ?

I'm looking for a good credit card or a credit union to build up credit ? Any advice or tips you can give someone? I'll worry about rewards once after I build credit.

I would say a prepaid credit card from First Premier Bank. You give them, say, $200, and you get a $200 credit limit. Use it a couple of times a month for small purchases, like gas or gas station purchases, and pay it off every month as soon as you get the bill. I did this and went from having no credit to buying a house with a 780 credit score in 3 years. They report every month and when you close it, they will send you your money back. I always tell everyone about First Premier. Good luck!

Discover card has a student card that pays you for your good grades :) and doubles cash rewards for the first year. :)
They also do a referral program. So both parties receive a $50 cash back bonus after the new member makes a purchase in the first 3 months

I got my at my local bank. Do a bunch of paper work they mail you a card. Easy as that.

I personally use Chase. I started with their high school debit account and now use their college credit card, debit card, and savings account. I believe all the fees were exempted because i put in $500 to my savings right from the start and for the credit card they don't charge interest until after 1 year of having it. So you get to build your credit for one year without worrying about interest accumulating on payments. I've been with Chase for 3 years now and it's been working for me :)

Nooooooo!!! Do not get a credit card. There is seriously no reason you need credit. Ever. Including buying a house. Neither I nor my husband had ever borrowed money for anything, literally had no credit history, and bought our house at a great interest rate. The bank wanted to see a consistent payment history. We provided statements showing we'd payed our cell phone, power, water, rent (rented for the first 6 months we were married), and Charter bill consistently and on time, showed our debt to income ratio was good (it was zero, actually), and that we were consistently and gainfully employed (pay stubs) and had zero problems getting a home loan. Saying you need credit is a lie. If you can't pay cash and it's not a house, you can't afford it. Don't buy it.
Living without debt is so worth it. What's it like? We pay cash for me to go to school (what isn't covered by the scholarships I worked by butt off for) and I will graduate in May debt-free. We go on 3 or 4 vacations per year, which we pay cash for. We just paid cash for the medical bills for the birth of our son next month. I get to take a full 12 weeks off to stay home after he's born and we can afford to go without my paycheck because we aren't buried in debt. In July, we paid cash for the truck I've wanted since middle school. I bought myself a motorcycle, with cash, for my 21st birthday last spring. My husband, who is our primary "bread winner," left his job for 4 months to attempt to start his own business. It didn't work out, but it didn't bankrupt us, and he got to pursue his dream. He won't have to ask "what if" for the rest of his life. I'm 22 years old and we joke that we're already "retired" because even though we work, we can do whatever we want. And we're far from rich. We both work solidly blue-collar jobs. We work hard. And we get to play hard.
