Check your own cervix?

Question

Does anyone check their own cervix? Any ideas what it should feel like at 25 weeks? I am having contractions and just want to know if they are doing anything I should be concerned about. Thanks!

If you are having contractions, stop what you are doing, drink a couple glasses of water and lay down for an hour. If this doesn't help go to labor and delivery right away.

Your cervix should be firm and you should not be able to feel any openings larger then the tip of your pinky. 1 cm is roughly the tip of your pinky. If you have had previous children your cervix will probably always be a little open but most likely not more the 1 - 2 cm. if you are experiencing contractions they are most likely Braxton hicks. To be safe you should have it checked, but in a pinch try to lay down on your side and drink some water. If you don't experience relief in 30 min. Or things feel more intense at any point then definitely call your doctor. Try to stay away from heavy activity and some times round ligament pain can add to the feeling of intensity of contractions. But again if there is any doubt call your OB or midwife.
