Views on cord blood banking?

Scam or actually a good thing to have? 
I read a lot of conflicting reviews. Not sure if I want to make the investment.

I think the uses are incredibly limited at this point. I would, however, donate my baby's cord blood to a national registry if that option is available at the hospital where I deliver.

I just asked my doctor about this the other day. I see marketing and information about it everywhere but it's so expensive so I wanted to know how common of a practice it is. My doctor said she only gets about 1 patient a year that requests it. That kind of opened my eyes and made me feel better if we don't pursue it. I don't plan on doing the banking, but I think I'll donate it.

I think it's a good opportunity for research that will hopefully bring medical science further.
