Why the separation of races?

Okay so this time I am posting anonymously because I'm actually a little worried about the kind of response I will get. I hope this post gets decent feedback and not arguing.
When I graduated high school, there was a regular graduation for the people at the specific school and there were special graduations that you attended with everyone in the district. These graduations were "invite" only. The "invite" being your race. There were Asain, Hispanic, and Black graduations. These graduations were professionally catered, scholarships handed out, and done in much nicer facilities than regular graduations. There were no Pacific Islander, Native American, or White graduations. 
I understand that yes, America has a shitty past with minority races and that it feels as if white people will forever pay for it. 
But my question is that if we're in 2016 and everyone is preaching equality, why are we still segregating ourselves? If we want to have pride in our race, which I completely think is okay, why can't we keep it equal? Why is it perfectly okay to raise your countries flag and be proud of where you are from and nobody is allowed to say anything but it is considered racist for a white person to be proud that they're white and it's perfectly okay to stomp on the American flag and burn it and people who stop it are called racists?

Nobody says white people can't be proud. And if everyone was widely accepted there would be no need for any race to set up organizations or make their own events to praise and award people that look like themselves.

You want answers to questions that will never be answered. Lots of people wonder the same thing. It's sad. I know. I wish that there wasn't racism and that people could get along. Not all blacks are racist. Not all white are racist. Being racist, is dividing us all.. When we all should be standing together and taking back our country.

Why do some schools in the south have segregated proms that are initiated by white people? 
I'm not trying to be a smart ass, but I am getting annoyed about minorities being accused of seperating themselves from whites. We don't segregate because we think we are better and whites are racist. It happens because for the longest time there were no spaces for minorities in the white world, so we had to create those spaces for ourselves. And in some regards, those spaces are still needed. Black colleges and churches exist because blacks weren't allowed to go to school or worship with whites. And while things are different today, it's still easier for black people to go to black colleges than other colleges. (And for the ignorant people, black colleges aren't black only, and anyone of any race can go if they want to.) Also blacks and Hispanics/Latinos have lower graduation rates than whites and Asians, so there are a lot of student unions and whatnot that cater to these individuals to try to get them to graduate high school and college so we can have more black and Hispanic professionals. When the culture of America changes to allow full acceptance of minorities (it has changed a lot, but we still have a long way to go), then all this seperating will end.

What do you have to be proud of? Your skin color? In the US white people really have nothing (as a group) to pride themselves on.

Unless you want to celebrate stealing land? Enslaving people? Oppressing people?

Idk. In order to have 'white pride' there needs to be something of which you're proud of as a group of people. Something that is unique to white people and your experiences. From where I'm standing white people don't have much to be proud of.

Equality doesn't have to (and shouldn't) mean pretending we have no differences. We do. That's okay. We should embrace them rather than trying to erase other people's culture and history.

Basically, black people don't have to pretend they aren't black to appease you. And they can celebrate their history and culture and STILL be deserving of and be treated with respect.

The graduations might have something to do with the modern culture and hardships those races face societally. Statistically black and Hispanic people's have a lesser rate of graduating than white people, because of socioeconomic reasons and a lack reasources for a quality education. These might be celebrating their particular hard work despite societal expectations.

I'm white and I've never had to grow up as a minority (well, now where I live white is a minoriry....but not when I was a kid), so I can't feel what it is like to be someone else growing up that way. It seems to me it usually is people who grew up like me who tend to not understand why there are special events etc. 
But I married a man who has had to live with being treated differently for his ethnicity and I've learned so much over the years about how he is treated differently. Even simple things like going to a customer service desk. He still asks me to do certain things because it goes easier for me. It's not my fault and it's not his fault.
I now have such a greater tangible understanding of the battle. It is not simple. It is not easy. Leave people alone, let them have whatever events and occasions they want to. 
I used to march and advocate for a cause I believed in, now I fight the daily battle alongside someone who lives it.

I think the important thing is that they had the main graduation where all the students attended. Sometimes schools have organizations based on race and maybe they wanted their own ceremony to celebrate their achievements as minorities? Tbh I don't know but I couldn't care less.

I think it's absolutely crazy to have all those different graduations. Here, it's one for everyone, as it should be. What the hell is the point in all the dividing?

I don't agree that you or anyone should be proud of a skin colour. You didn't do anything to achieve it.

I had no idea there were separate graduations going on. At that age I HATED going to graduations and programs where all you did was sit and listen to people speak, so I doubt if I'd known about it that I would've wanted to attend a second graduation. The only reason I went to mine was for my parents.

Either way, I don't think these separate ceremonies are about a race of people intentionally separating or segregating themselves.
