Is the D.A.R.E. program good for America's kids (K-12)?

When I finished it, I still didn't know that marijuana and pot were the same. If someone had offered me weed I'd have probably thought they meant dandelion.

It was like sex ed. Loud insistence on saying NO, but no useful information to help you recognise what you're saying no to...

No. It taught you where to find the drugs, what they should look like and approximately how much to expect paying for them.

Honestly I won't let my future children take D.A.R.E, especially if they haven't figured out differentiating between medical cannabis and crack.

Seriously, they compare weed to heroin.

We had the dare program in 5th grade. The only thing I remember being taught was that alcohol was bad and that we should never drink it. I still didn't know what marijuana was, I just knew that it was bad for us and we would die. The cop also said that once we got to middle school, everyone would be offering you drugs and that never happened.

My friends go to festivals and wear DARE fannie packs to hold their drugs. 
I wouldn't ever touch meth or heroine or any of that crazy life ruining shit, but I'm not sure it's because of the DARE program.

My friends mom was a police officer who taught the program... He was arrested for drugs. So. No, I don't think it's too effective.

When I had it in 5th grade, all I remember from it is; Marijuana was bad, cigarettes were bad, and alcohol was bad. They didn't talk about prescription pain pills, heroin, meth, coke, crack, benzodiazepines, MDMA, etc. They had a box in the classroom where you could basically "tell" on your family members for smoking weed. 
In 7th grade, we had something called G.R.E.A.T 
Gang Resistance Education and Training.
This taught us about gangs, shootings, and stuff like that. 
Neither of these programs worked for anyone. If they're gonna teach these things, it should be in middle school, but, it needs to be taught better. 
I ended up with a pain pill addiction that lasted for a long time, and I will never be the same again. Too many people I know died from heroin and pills. We need better education about drugs, and no, weed should not be the one they're forcing down your throat.

When I had DARE (many, many moons ago), my friend's father was the DARE officer. The irony of this is that my friend was/is one of the biggest pot heads I know and his father was a cop and a major DARE advocate! So DARE does not work as intended.

Last I was involved it was already outdated and focused on the wrong things. It didn't stop kids that were going to experience with drugs and it didn't scare people away from them. The irony of drug users wearing dare shirts was something we all thought was absolutely hilarious and I think that about sums the program up.

I feel like they need to change it up somehow. My program was only in 5th grade for a semester. But I didn't know anyone in middle school who did drugs. So by the time I got to high school, I was amazed that so many kids smoked weed. 
So I think to be more effective, they need to tailor it more to the community they're in. The end of 8th grade would have been a better time to do it. And weed was the biggest "problem" in my area, so we should have learned more about it. I didn't know anyone who did hard drugs, so it was kind of a waste of time to go over them in 5th grade.

Sure. And they decided to spend months talking about how bad marijuana is and then a minute to say "meth is bad, don't do it". Sorry, I know the point is to stay away from drugs, but how about spend more time talking about the more serious ones and not just weed? It was kind of pointless to be honest. They taught us like one year in 3rd grade. I didn't even understand what drugs were at the time. It should've been done when I was older, maybe 6th grade.
