How long did you have painful contractions that weren't frequent or regular before you went into labor?

I've been having contractions that hurt -- but not like take your breath away hurt -- since yesterday and I dilated 1/2 a cm and softened up a lot since Wednesday, so I'm just curious how long other mommies were stuck in this phase before real labor came!

My contractions never got regular... They started from being 4-8 min apart, and I was pushing to contractions being still 4-8 min apart :) the doctor said its normal as long as I'm dialating and baby's going down, and she did :) 13 hours passed from the first contraction to having my baby on my chest
