There are ways to minimize the burning feeling though, when I had my first when I felt the burning sensation I paused in my pushing, to give the are a chance to stretch, and then continued with the next contraction. The stretching is what causes the burning feeling, if you stretch it too quickly it hurts more

When the baby crowns. Some people say they could feel it even with an epidural. There are things you can do to minimize the pain though, perineal massage, olive oil and warm towels, water birth, or at least soaking in the tub so soften the skin (so long as doc says it's ok and your water hasn't broken yet)
