Do you think I'm wrong?

Question

I'm a full-time college student and I work part time (16 hrs a week) to pay for my monthly car loan and my monthly phone payment. I live with my parents and they help me out by paying my car insurance monthly as well as a monthly payment for a personal loan I had to take out to cover my tuition. I just got $2000 back in tax returns which I am using to have LASIK eye surgery done in March, this is a procedure I've wanted for a very long time, I have terrible vision without glasses/contacts. Well my parents don't think I should use my tax return money on that. They think I should put that money towards my monthly bills. I don't agree with them because that's the reason why I work part-time, to afford my other bills. Who do you think is correct?

Apparently you can't afford your bills if your parents are helping you pay. LASIK will be there when you save enough for it. Adding another bill is not smart.

Your parents support you even tho they don't have to so I believe it is selfish of you to take the money instead of putting it towards YOUR bills.  I believe the responsible thing to do is take that money and send to your own bills considering you're supposed to be grown and no longer a dependent.  You can have your lassik once you have your ducks in a row and are no longer being supported by your parents.  Yes you work BUT it's not enough to support yourself therefore without them you'd be shit out of luck.  Do the right thing and give them the money so that your car insurance and loans can be paid for considering its your debt and not theirs.

Hun, it sounds like they're trying to politely tell you they're tired of footing the bill.. Trust me I'm damn near blind without contacts but lazik requires more than just an hour and back to normal, what about follow ups, or if like so many others you require more surgeries to fix your eyes, what if it totally screws up your eyes(there's a risk of that) a lot of people who get it deal with a lot of issues later and a lot more out of pocket costs.. You do what you want but in the grown up world your bills come before your wants, they have payment plans for vision surgery at most places as well.. I'm not trying to be mean or rude just saying where it sounds like they're coming from.

It's very disrespectful against your parents that you put your unneccassary wishes over paying neccessity bills. It's their money and they help you out. They could go on a vacation trip with their money instead of helping pay your bills..... First: pay ALL your bills by yourself, second: if there is left over money - you can use it like you want. But FIRST pay ALL your bills!

If you can't afford your bills to the point you're getting help from your parents you should allocate that money toward them. Spending on a procedure you don't really need right now is selfish. PS - my vision is so bad I am not eligible for LASIK. You are able to correct your vision with glasses and contacts, but thankful for that. Then once you're older and on your own two feet revisit getting LASIK. 😉

Yea it is your own money and your own life, but your not the only one involved in your situation. Your parents are using their money to support you. LASIK isn't a necessity but paying your bills are. Before I would spend money on myself i would make sure I had the money to spend and all while not relying on someone else.

Plus if you're young, your eyes may not be fully developed in which you'll have to have the surgery again in the future.  You should hold off until your financially independent and stable.

Where do you live where LASIK is only 2k? I've been looking into it and it starts at 5k.....

However if you can't pay your own bills or loan, then I'd wait on it. They shouldn't be paying for your loan that you can't even afford, and if you get a chunk of money, the adult thing to do would be to put your tax return to that loan. Remember... Loans have interest that are applied every single day. LASIK will still be there and available to you later. Pay off debts first, "needs", then get the "wants" later when you've saved up and exhausted the debt.
