Long Engagement

Did you have a long engagement? Considering the average engagement time lasts 13-18 months. Was it planned that way? I want to get married but my SO said he wants to do other things before getting married (move to a new city, buy a house, travel) and I explained that we don't have to have the ceremony right away. We could always plan to have the wedding in 2-3 years. Or is that silly?
