Birth Control/IUD?!

Question

I know -- strange topic for the category I'm posting in. So this will be our second baby and we're thinking there's a possibility she may be our last. Once she's here, I'm going to get on some sort of "semi-permanent" birth control. The IUD is near the top of my list because it lasts for 5 years and it doesn't raise blood pressure (which was a problem for me on the Pill and Nuvaring). 
This may sound silly, but I am so worried about it hurting! Despite the fact I've given birth naturally and will get to do so again with this baby girl. 
What does it honestly feel like getting an IUD in? Is doing anything to prevent it worth it?
My mom said when she got hers in she liked in the parking lot afterwards 😳

I loved my Mirena IUD. I had it for the full 5 years and not a single problem. Issues aren't going to happen for everyone and I'm sure people will tell you their horror stories about it. Things happen. But you should  at least try it. Just check for your strings and if something feels off call your doctor. It's as simple as that. 🙂

I had the mirena for 3 years before taking it out to get pregnant. It was awesome! The periods are light, if you even get one. There is only a small dose of hormones in it so I didn't experience any wight gain with it. And if you change your mind and want to start trying for another baby you just make an appointment- they remove it and you are back to trying!
The amount of pain, in my opinion depends on your cervix. The most uncomfortable part of the procedure is when they hold everything still down there to put it in. The cramping for the next couple weeks was equivalent to period cramps, which could be soothed with Tylenol. 
The freedom of not thinking about birth control and knowing that I was "covered in that department" was the best feeling!

Maybe a little TMI- but my husband said he could feel it the first few times we had sex. It never slowed us down but he was a tiny bit wierded out, but still sooooo worth it!

The mirena was absoluty terrible for me. I know most people have great experiences with it but I was one of the people who did not. It wasn't so bad being put in but my body hated it. I literally had just about every symptom from hair loss to anxiety to extremely sore breasts I could not even walk (my boobs weren't even that sore while being pregnant) I never got a period but honestly wished I did because the period symptoms were worse then I've ever felt before. I never had cramps before my period but after getting mirena the cramps were debilitating. And those are just a few of my issues. I could only take 4 months of the pain and discomfort so I insisted my OB take it out, I think she was mad and didn't believe my symptoms but I do not care..never again for me. Afterward I really started googling side effects and came across some pretty scary stuff so make sure you do a lot of research!!! Good luck!

My doctor numbed my cervix with a shot before inserting it. Honestly just felt like getting a Pap but with a bit more pressure. My best friend got one years ago and I don't think she was numbed and she said the pain was terrible for her (so bad in fact that she had to pull her car over on the drive home to throw up). I only had the iud for 2 months because I was still cramping hardcore and couldn't take it anymore. But I had never been pregnant before getting the iud so I'm sure that made a difference. Getting it removed was pretty painless as well. Like other ladies have said, I think everyone's experience is a little different but I would definitely recommend the numbing shot just in case!

I had the Mirena and never felt it even go in. Its a process that takes less than 5 minutes. Its seriously like a dr inserting a tampon only smaller.

If you are truly concerned ask them for a quick squirt of lidocaine spray but honestly they will probably say no because it truly is almost impossible for it to be painful.

I personally had a back experience with the Mirena IUD, and I know it doesn't happen for everyone. Mine hurt SO bad being put in, but this was before ever being pregnant or having kids (they normally won't give this to women who haven't had kids but I begged as I was tired of remembering the pill) but my husband could feel it when we had sex, and the IUD itself was starting to embed into my uterus so I had mine removed after 6 months. My best choice has always been the pill, with the less desirable part of having to remember it every day, and being a little extra hormonal...but that's just my personal experience. To each their own! Whatever your choice is, I believe birth control is a wonderful tool to help family planning and prevent pregnancy until it is the "right time"

Just s FYI the IUD has a very high rate for women getting pregnant with it in. My GF just got pregnant last month and wasn't trying and ended up miss carrying because the IUD was still in her.

I got the Mirena after my last and had it removed within the first 2 to 3 months... my body said no way. It made my legs ache and my stomach constantly hurt... my body had not been under the influence of birth control in well over a decade so it was not cool with it, I listened to my body... I think it bothered my ob when I insisted it come out.

My friend had it and admitted the first 6 months were terrible but she kept it until it evened out.

I loved my mirena! It hurt for me to have it inserted, but only for a minute. I had never had a baby and the doc said it hurts way less (if at all) if you have already had a baby. I plan on getting it again!

It didn't hurt for me when they inserted it. The doctor did it at my 6 week postpartum checkup while my cervix was still "relaxed". However, she cut my strings too short and when I went to have it removed it had also migrated up. I had to have an ultrasound assisted removal and that didn't feel great. If you do get it, make sure they keep your strings long enough! I was happy with it all in all otherwise.
