Cherokee Citizenship
I love all of you in CC. I need to put this out here. Please some people, stop being so insensitive to Native Americans. I keep seeing it brought up that white people need to be more mindful of POC and that people of all races come in many complexions. All of that is true. It also includes Native Americans. I feel like often many people who have no clue how tribal laws work want to roll their eyes and say people are too white to be native. Every tribe has different laws to determine who can claim their tribal rights and I can't think of one tribe that determines citizenship by skin color. Some have blood quantum requirements, some do not. The reason so many people claim to be Cherokee is because we are one of the largest surviving tribes and there are three federally reconized tribes in different states. There are 315,000 documented Cherokee citizens today. Citizenship in the Cherokee Nation is determined by having a direct ancestor on the Dawes rolls which was taken from 1898-1914 not by blood quantum. I have personally been told I can't be Cherokee here on Glow that I could only be white because I am pale. I just rolled my eyes and went on my way but now I'm seeing other people get told there not Cherokee or, "I'm sure they'll say their Cherokee, rolls eyes." I have never questioned someone's ethnicity or heritage. I feel it is disrespectful.
