Is it acceptable to have two sets of Godparents?

We asked my husbands sister and her husband to be godparents back in August when I first found out I was pregnant. But now I'm seriously reconsidering letting them raise my son if, God forbid, my husband and I are no longer around. They already have five kids of their own but I have some issues with how they parent... Anyway, I was thinking of asking my friend and her husband to be Godparents also, and maybe asking them if they would take him. So can I give my boy two sets of godparents?

You can do whatever you want but as far as the practical,  non religious aspect of God parents goes...you would need to make a binding legal document..otherwise both couples could end up in court for a long time deciding eho actually gets custody.

The godparents don't necessarily have to be guardians of your child, if something happens to you.

In other cultures it is different as well, my SO is Filipino and said it is the norm to have more than one set. (Which contradicts what this other commenter said, since he is Catholic 😒)

Depends what religion you are. I'm Catholic and in the UK you are only allowed 1 godmother and 1 godfather.

If you're looking to set someone as the guardian of your child if something happens to you, you need to put it in a will. Your verbal consideration and arrangement will not necessarily be considered and things can get messy.

My parents chose godparents but we were to live w our grandmother god forbid something happen to them (luckily it didn't). It was just for fun really, because we aren't really religious either
