Thoughts on "godparents"?

Question

We are atheists, so we don't want to have "godparents" for our kids, but I like the premise behind the idea. Is there a non-religious way to have godparents?

We did this for our son. We were joking and calling them "godless parents". They're atheists too.

Yes, we think it is a nice bond to have.  We are going to have a humanist ceremony and have people stand for our son.  I have been reading about what other people  call them and so far we like guideparents best.  Not totally decided though.

A few folks I know have opted instead for 'fairy godparent,' specifically in the queer community. The idea is that this is a person other than your parent that you can go to about life, love, puberty, beliefs etc. That person has to be around and really on board with the idea, though!

We're atheists too and plan on having "oddparents" for our kids if/when they come along.

My husband and I have always joked with our friends about making them "science parents" when the time comes.

Common among friends are "super aunties" or "super uncles" they are even mentioned like this on the birth announcements.

Being a godparent in the traditional way is not legally binding when something happens to the parents any way, and obviously neither is this (unless you put it in your legal testament) so it's more of a honorary title but I like it.

Shows appreciation to your sibling/best friend and they usually are extra special in your kids life, cause they're super you know 😉

You can have godparents for your kids and not be religious, no problem. But if the basis is actually for them to have legal rights if you die, then that needs to he notated in a will, religious or not.

we call the 'god parents' aunts and uncles. My wife is agnostic and ion atheist. the 'god parents' range in belief systems 😂

So I had this discussion with a friend and we jokingly came up with 'evolution mom /dad'

Especially cos the idea of a godparent, initially, was that these people would be responsible for your child's religious education and someone who would bring your kid closer to God.

I’ve always viewed godparents as the ones who get you if your parents die. I’ve never had a religious connection in my mind tbh
