Confusing hookup

I've been hooking up with this one guy on and off for about two years now. We would kind of see each other exclusively for a few months, see other people, and end up back at it again eventually.

Since we finished school I have been seeing him a lot more lately. We text almost everyday and I see him more than I used to, even outside of just hooking up. All this has made me want more out of this, but I'm afraid to see what he thinks because it might make him think I'm clingy and emotional. I just want to see if he thinks we have a shot at something normal. He's never been the guy to be in a relationship, and I often feel pretty insecure that he's been interested in me for so long.

Should I talk to him about it? Or just write it off?
