Tax Question?? I need help

Im only 19 never did taxes. Im adopted and moved out at 18. My adopted mom is STILL claiming me and it erks me that idk what to do. Ive worked 3 places but only for a few months...idk how to file taxes im clueless! I called irs but as a young one i dont know who to speak too. Can i get everything my mom have gotten back?? Thanks so much

She's probably claiming you as a dependent to increase her deductions. If she didn't support you financially last year, she can't do that. When you file your taxes, if your SSN has been used on another claim, the IRS will reject your refund and flag your mom's. At that point, they'll likely investigate your and your mom's claims. They'll settle it, but it will delay your return.

Just because your mom claims you doesn't mean she Is getting your refund. She gets a tax credit because of having a dependent. But you wouldn't get that same credit  so it's not like she's taking your money

There are loop holes in the tax laws, for instance if her mom still has her on her insurance she can claim her. Or if she applied for student loans. My dad was able to claim me until I was 26 and it was legal. But he's not taking any money from me. He's just getting more of a kickback from the government. I hate how people always think they automatically get the money. Nope it would just go back to Uncle Sam.

You can find someone who does taxes and have them do them for you. If your moms using your SSN and not putting in your earnings that will be bad for you as when they find out you'll probably get audited and they'll want all the info and you may have to pay something I'm not sure for that though. Either way its illegal for her to claim you to increase her taxes if she hasn't supported you for more than 6mos of the year. If you do your taxes it'll delay them ya but at least you won't have to worry when you do file them about them going back farther. If you were to apply for anything at your address its going to look like someones trying to screw the IRS and they would probably cause issues. Good luck hun, at the very least you should go to a tax place like Jackson Hewitt or h&r block and talk to them.

If your mom paid for at least 50% of your expenses in the year 2015, then it is her right to claim you as a defendant. This can include food, housing, clothing, phone bills, car payments/gas, insurance, etc. and it is very likely that she will get back more money claiming you than you will get for being independent.

Has she filed already? if she's not supporting you then she shouldn't be filing it for you. Does she know you want to file your own? How did she get your w2's?

If you are not living with your mom then she can not legally claim you. Unless she is supporting you in some way for more that half the year.  You can go to a place like h&r block and they will give you advice and tell you what you need to do
