Period for 6 week check

So this seems very uncomfortable... I know that the doctors have seen it all and a lot worse, but I am supposed to go for my 6 week postpartum check in an hour. I have my period... and it's pretty bad and heavy. I called the doctor's office to try to push the appointment back a bit since I have my period and they said "oh, that won't be a problem." Aren't they supposed to do a pelvic check to make sure it all healed? I feel bad having the doctor all up in there when I'm on my period, especially when it's this heavy. Did anyone else experience this? What all do they do at the 6 week check?
