What's your parenting style??

Question

I know everyone has their own opinions of course and their own styles of parenting. Before anything, please don't be bitchy about how other women choose to raise their kids, we are not here to judge! I saw a post about bullying and wanted to know your opinions on how you will raise your kids when it comes to bullying/protecting themselves. My momma always told me never to put my hands on anybody but "if they hit you, you hit them back". We were brought up to defend ourselves and not "cry", for a lack of better terms, when someone hit or bullied us. I get that you shouldn't put you hands on anyone but I'm not gonna tell my kids they have to sit there and get beat up and not hit back. That's ridiculous to me. Or run away! That doesn't always work either. So what are your views, how have you or will you raise your kids?

Sometimes the way to shut a bully up is to make it where it's really difficult for them to talk. I try to teach my kids to be good people, but sometimes a good person needs to throw a good punch.

I've taught my kids to always resolve conflict with their words, and go to an adult for help when necessary.
I've also taught them that if someone puts their hands on them, they have the right to defend themselves. Never start a fight, but if someone hits you first, you damn well better finish it.

I was raised in the same way. We were always told never to start a fight or pick on others period. But we (my sister and I) would get to go out for ice cream if we stuck up for each other or someone else who was being picked on, or fought back if we were hit. We lived in a small town, so it wasn't as bad as it could have been. My sister had wild, curly hair when she was little. It's beautiful, but something kids would get mean about. There were a handful of occasions where girls would bully up on her, throw rocks at her, and push her around. Those were the only "fights" I've ever been in in my life. We grew up to be loving women, so it worked for us. I hope my children are the same way. Protective.

I don't have kids but I agree kids need to be taught to protect themselves which could mean fighting someone off. But on the other end I have sworn to myself that I will never be passive. I knew a little boy who's mom used that reasoning as a way to not have to stop bullying. This little boy grew up and is now a complete bully as an adult.

Same. I told my little that defending herself is number one. Whatever that means at the moment. If you can get away, do that. If all you can do is fight, do that. I hope she's never in a position to be beat up.
