Would you be ok with this?

Would you allow your 9, almost 10, year old to participate in a school extracurricular activity without a guardian/parent being present?  I mean, there would be other adults there, just not your childs.  I have a coworker whos child is in chess and has an upcoming tournament on a Saturday.  She works graveyard and husband works days.  The father could drop off the child and then a couple hours later the mom could show up.  The event would still be going on for a few more hours.  The tournament is on a school property....oh and the child has a phone.

If I can drop my kid off at school for 6/7 hours and he's ok then I'm sure he'll be ok in an after school activity.

If it is at the school and supervised by school employees... Don't you send your kid to them every weekday anyway?

Of course. It's a supervised school event... I'm not really seeing the issue here unless maybe no one is ever available to be reached if the kids need something. Life gets crazy, working shift work is hard. Give them a break.

I don't see the problem there r adults there to run it and look out for the kids. So both parents work kid will still b looked after. No different leaving ur kid at school with adult teachers or allowing ur kid to go on a field trip with teachers and chaperones but not being available to chaperone urself.

I am not seeing anything wrong with this at all. Sounds totally fine to me.

Also I know that when I was 9 or 10 I would NOT have been pleased if I had to have one of my parents supervising every activity and event I went to 😂 I'd think they were crazy.

You leave your kids at school without you, so how is this different? There may even a higher ratio of teacher/staff to student at such an event.

I think by nine or 10 years old, a lot of children are entering that stage where they are absolutely embarrassed by everything their parents do. Allowing them to have some extracurricular activities that don't require constant supervision by their parents might actually help foster independence. Chess club, debate team, and other things like that which take place indoors on school grounds I could definitely agree with. But when it comes to things like contact sports, I believe at least one parent should be present the whole time. Just in case of emergency.

I would definitely let that happen! I would probably ask another parent or ask the teacher to make sure that everything goes smoothly. Teachers don't like being the caretaker if they aren't meant to be, so make sure that it's fine to operate this way. If yes, I see no problem at all! The child will be safe and will have the parents numbers.

Growing up, my parents couldn't attend every single thing I did, but I would still hold my commitments to teams/ groups/ whatever. I don't understand all the fear in society. It's a school function. Give it a chance
