When do you let your child watch rated R movies?

Whether going to the movie theater, or watching a movie at home, in general, when do you plan on allowing your child to watch "Rated R" movies?

It would depend on their maturity level. There is no way I'd let a little kid watch something they're not ready to see. I went to see Catching Fire back when it first came out, and there was a little girl sitting next to me (loudly) asking questions the ENTIRE movie. If you can't understand that getting shot in the head kills you, and the cry when your mommy tells you he's dead, you are WAY too young to be seeing that kind of movie. Not to mention it completely ruined the experience for me because she was loud. Don't get me wrong; I LOVE kids! I just think there is a certain level of maturity to be reached before PG-13 or R movies.

There's some older r rated movies that are purely rated for language and violence.

The lost boys for example. It's r rated for gore and language. And the gores not even that bad by today's standards. I've seen worse in pg 13 films of todays. Same goes for Blair witch. I just explained to him it was all fake before hand. It's only rated r for language.

So when it's something like that, that ive already seen and know what to expect, I don't mind my 9 year old stepson watching it. I absolutely won't just bring him to an r rated movie that I haven't seen before tho.

Depends on the movie & the child. Also I would have had to already seen the movie ! Or at least had a friend who has seen it to tell me if its innapropriate for a teen or not. I'd let them watch whatever they want at like 17. Maybe 16 depending on their maturity

Many of my favorite movies are rated R for language, those are fine for any age. Also sex doesn't bother me (not porn) as long as it's portrayed in a respectful manner. Violence is the only thing I would not expose a young mind to, so like 13 or so for that one.

It depends on why it's rated R. Language - not a big deal. Sex - loving, consensual sex is fine, while rape scenes wait until older. Violence - senseless, very graphic violence is not enjoyable or appropriate, but some scenes are fine.

It also has to do with plot and how those things contribute to the narrative. Video games have similar rating systems, but they're ultimately not useful. For example, Halo and Grand Theft Auto get the same rating. The first is cartoon violence and about saving all life in the galaxy, while the second is full of senseless violence, excessive language, complete disregard for life, and encourages dangerous and illegal behavior. They are not the same class of narrative.

For us, we plan to preview R films and then watch at home with the kids.

My mom let me watch the child's play movies when I was like 5... And I'm pretty sure it haunted my life. I was so scared to sleep for awhile. Most rated R movies either have nudity or scary stuff in it. I think I'd wait til the child was at least maybe like 13. Kids tend to repeat things that aren't appropriate because they absorb so much knowledge. I wouldn't want my child being scared to sleep either. I'm all for educating my kids on sex too, but I don't think they need to be seeing it actually happening at such a young age. All they need to know is risks honestly. Movies don't usually make things realistic and sometimes it's disturbing to a child.

My parents were old when they had me, as my half brother was 13 when I was born. We never watched childhood movies when I was a kid. Always horror movies so as an adult they put me to sleep.

Totally depends on the movie. Some movies are rated R for violence and language, while some are rated R for sexual content and graphic nudity. It also depends on the maturity level of the child. Having older siblings and being exposed to different stuff at a younger age has an effect on how kids act. But it's mainly just the movie. Like, I would be cool taking a kid to see 13 Hours, but not Deadpool, they're rated based on different things but are both R.

My parents never let us watch R rated movies but they were super strict and conservative.....I feel like once kids get into high school if they haven't heard about it already they "learn" about a lot of the things R movies portray so I would say around 14-15 is when I would start allowing some R rated movies.
