Do you think this is true

Question

I seen this on fb and immediately thought it is a choice. I'm sorry, I have addicts in my family who I love dearly and had a close cousin pass away from an overdose a year ago but it is and was a choice to take drugs. Yes it is an illness but what was it before you decided to use? A choice. We need to stop letting people feel like it's OK. We need to educate and prevent others from doing this to themselves. We need to let people know when they're taking drugs they're wrong. Sorry but that's the way I feel. I don't want to watch other people I love die in a hospital bed at the age of 24 over a high and have to explain to their child why their parent is going to be there anymore. Am I wrong?

Nope, I believe in this post, absolutely. There is an element of choice in most cases yes, but the mental issue that brings a person to the choice is the underlying reason for them even considering it. We don't treat those mental illnesses in this country. We let them run rampant and judge those that have them, and then blame them for making bad choices because of them. If we treated mental illnesses properly instead of instilling blame and pointing fingers, we would be much better off.

Also many addictions to drugs come from addictions to pain killers prescribed by dr's and not properly monitored or maintained. We get people addicted to these things, then we see they are addicted, take it away, and then wish them luck. The body doesn't work like that. Drugs like heroin serve as replacements for already established opiate addictions predicated by our prescription drug industry, ignorance of mental health, and failure to support the real problem.

There are underlying reasons for addictions. Many untreated mental health issues lead to many of those addictions. Same and cognizant people don't just wake up one day and decide to ruin their lives for fun.

I truly believe that most addicts start off trying to self medicate. And then it just gets out of hand.

People choose to do drugs. They don't choose the addiction. It all starts with a choice. Some may have more addictive personalities than others. Some people are more prone to addiction, but it all starts with a choice. My older sister was an addict. She got clean and has remained so for over 25 years. I've seen how it affects people. It still all starts with a choice; a decision to use.

That last line need to be emphasized.

Yes the initial use was likely a choice, but when you start demonizing someones' choices and telling them they're sick or essentially punish them for being this way it doesn't help them heal and stop using. Human beings need positive socialization to heal and be better people. What do you think drives someone to use in the first place? If you want someone to improve then you need to give them real support instead of half-hearted/half-angry remarks.

U choose to not get help. My mother was an addict for years and years but she got help and got herself out of it. It's hard and it sucks but it's up to u to make that decision. If u let it ruin ur life then that's on u.
