I believe in a higher being, but  I don't believe that everything in the bible actually happened. It's more of a great story book that teaches morals, structure and hope, in a world that at the time needed that.

Well in a sense I agree. I'm a Catholic so we refer to God as He. But it is understood that God transcends gender. The use of He is actually to permit us to identify properly with him because we cannot identify as human beings with an It. We also believe that God's spirit rests within mankind and all of creation. So it would be correct to say God's spirit rests within me but incorrect to say God and I are the same. The only physical thing we believe to actually be God is the Eucharist.
I often find it interesting all the dichotomies that exist in the world and how human beings can only be at one end of a spectrum. In this post I sense the dichotomy that God can either be a separate entity or the spirit/energy that infuses all of creation. According to my faith, God is both. As an omnipresent and infinite being God transcends every human dichotomy by encompassing both aspects and also aspects beyond the dichotomy.
I could talk about human dichotomies in relation to God all day lol. I find it very interesting.
