What do you count for day 1 of your cycle?

There seems to be a lot of conflicting information as to when you are considered to be on day 1 of your cycle. Do you count the first day of spotting day 1 or the first day of a menstural flow day 1?

CD 1 is the first day of flow. Spotting is not your period. You can spot before, after and between periods. It's only a period of you have actual flow. That's why every tracking app has an option for spotting and light, medium, heavy flow. It won't mark the start of a cycle until you select flow.
