At what age do you let your little one play video games?

Question

I'm of course talking about age appropriate games, but at what age do you let them start? My son plays video games, he's 6 about to be 7 in a few months... I seen nothing wrong with it and limit him as well, maybe an hour on it.  He also has a leapfrog tablet which he can play whenever he wants because all those games are education. My sister doesn't let her girls play games at all. And her daughter is a year younger..  just curious what others do in there house :)

My husband is a gamer. He plays destiny & halo mostly. So no way out daughter will be able to escape that. She will be exposed to those "violent" video games from the day she is born.

They started playing games about 5 or 6, educational type games but now at 9 they're allowed to play minecraft and adventure games just nothing rated over 10. They get an hour a day if their chores and homework are done and done with a good attitude. Most days they choose to go play with their friends outside though now that it's stopped raining and warmed up a little. As long as they don't become obsessed with it I see no problem with letting them have their game time, they're pretty good about limiting themselves so I don't have to.

I let my daughter play games. She is 5. She lives playing abc on the computer and some apps on my phone that are educational as well.  It's all about balance.  As long as your child is playing outside and enjoying the real world I don't see any problem with letting them play some age appropriate games in moderation especially since they have so many educational games out.

My kids are 4 & 1 1/2 and neither of them care to play games. They just want to watch Mickey Mouse & The Little Mermaid all day so I have to take away the tv and make them actually play with their toys and each other 🙄

I never played video games as a child because I hated violence (still do). I feel like technology could be, and is in some cases, a great help in teaching children basic tasks. It could also help make mundane things to do more interesting. For those cases I would start around 4 years old for only half and hour a day. As for entertaining games and such, around 6 years old, again only half an hour a day and only if they've done their chores and have been well behaved.

It depends on the game. If they're educational, they will still have a limit on time, but I don't have an age limit on that. Several Wii games they can play starting from a young age, and they have to wait to play mature games until I believe they are mature enough to handle them.

I remember playing computer games at the age of 6 or 7, but they were age appropriate and also educational ( also computers weren't as advanced when I was that young ). I remember being obsessed with one such game that had a robot guide and it was about astronomy. However, I didn't start playing actual video games until I was in college, things like WoW and then series like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. I love video games now at age 22, and I think my children will be around them no matter what because we live in an increasingly digital age. So they will likely be brought up as similar to me as possible.

He put a controller in his hand at 3, but it was more just for him to actually play with alone. Apparently it made a good toy cow.

As far as actually using it properly we let him start playing age appropriate games last year but it's mostly for bad weather days. We don't like to share the consoles and the computer is off limits completely. We'd rather him play outside anyway. I think an active child is worth a extra laundry load.
