Cervical checks?

Question

Has anyone had cervical checks? My doctor said she would start them this week (37).  I've heard a lot of people say they can induce labor, and I want baby to stay in until his due date!  I definitely don't want it to start my labor this week!!  We are a little concerned that my hips are too small and turned in, so I wouldn't mind having that checked, but I've never had any contractions or anything.  Has anyone had them? Why or why not??

My midwives will do them on request once you hit 36 weeks. But they don't want to. It's a way to introduce infection, and it's not very meaningful. You can be a three for weeks, or you could be a one in the morning and a ten a few hours later.

I had mine checked today for the very first time (38+3). The doctor said that having the cervix checked can cause an increase in Braxton Hicks contractions. Other than being a bit sore, I haven't had any contractions since leaving the doc's office and feel fine. I can say that in the past week or two, I have finally started to feel (or maybe figure out what they were) the Braxton Hicks contractions. I am a FTM so this whole contraction thing is new to me.

I was 1cm at 35 weeks last week. The way this boy is pushing down on my cervix feels like he's gonna make my water break all of a sudden.

I have had them with all four pregnancies. I've never heard that they can start labor. (Usually only stripping your membranes can do that). I do know there is a small risk of introducing bacteria when they check which is why some women refuse them. That and they don't really tell you a whole lot.

I had one at 33 1/3 weeks when I fell down my stairs. I had been having contractions and the baby had dropped for like 1 1/2 weeks before the fall. Wasn't too surprised to hear I was 1 cm dilated. I did have a little spotting that night from the check, but didn't have any increase in contractions or anything. My doctor doesn't do it at regular appointments until 39 weeks. I wish she would do it sooner because I want to know if my body is making any progress!

I had mine checked at 34 weeks due to the fact that I have a history of pre term labor. They wanted to check to make sure nothing crazy is going on...I was 1-2cm, so nothing crazy. I was 4cm at 35 weeks with my son, so it's a good start but makes me feel a little more at ease that I will make it to full term. Granted over all it means nothing. Lol
