Any tips on Ft Leonard Wood?

I'll be moving there in the next few months. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions about the anything there or the area in general? We'll be there for approx 3 years and will have our first baby shortly after moving there.

My husband was there for his in processing from the Marines into the army two weeks last year. I'm actually from SW Missouri so I'm familiar with the area but it's still a bit of a shock since there is really not a lot to do there but you are in close proximity to a lot of neat things. Springfield is about 2 hours away and has your mall/shopping and good food. Branson is about another hour south from Springfield and is super cool, my dad actually runs one of the shows there so I spent a lot of time in Branson growing up and I miss it. There's a lot more shopping, music, 2 amusement parks and a lot more good food. 
The area around you guys though is pretty small but you're lucky you're able to go out side of that and find something. We are stationed in Fairbanks Alaska and the nearest area like Springfield is 8 hours away! So if you don't like Ft Wood don't ever request Ft Wainwright!!!

Oh boy. I was there only there for tech school but... oh boy. If you like camping, fishing, hunting, etc, you might love it. But if you like going to an actual mall, I'm sorry to say that the closest one is in Springfield about 2hr away. I was there in March-July so I got snow and summer, which was very hot and humid.

Keep in mind that it is an Army post used for basic training for Army, and technical training for Air Force, Navy, Marines. So, lots of 18-19 year old kiddos very fresh out of basic training for their respective branch. There are also a lot of international military personnel roaming around as well.

There is a very nice place called Fugitive Beach just outside of town. Beautiful white sand and gorgeous blue water with cliff diving and water slides, full alcohol bar, snack bar, gazebos, beach volleyball. Very nice place and very worth the short drive.
