Does sex bring on or stop labor?

My doctor says it does, but online sites say it can stop it. I'm confused.

My doula friend told me that semen thins the cervix and if you orgasm it sends your body contraction hormones! Haven't tried it yet cause sex isn't all that fun at 39 weeks hahaha

Orgasm, and semen both cause the uterus to contract (the design is to help push the sperm towards where it will meet the egg). Semen also helps soften the cervix, but sex won't start labor unless your body is ready to start.

My Dr told me that when we have sex it will release chemical in the cervix that can cause it to thin. The same chemical is released when she checks my cervix at appts now.   If you're comfortable enough to have sex Id say go for it. I'm 38 weeks and have no desire so labor needs to come on it's own for me! Lol
