Does it hurt?

I'm getting the Merina put in soon and I'm really nervous it's going to hurt.

It's was uncomfortable for me but it didn't actually hurt. Everyone is different t tho!

Mine was uncomfortable (moderate period cramp feeling) for most of it. There was a brief 30-second part that was very intense when my doctor was actually placing the Mirena. I have a very small cervix, which made it harder to place, though.

Right when I was about to tell her to just give up because it hurt and I didn't want to continue, she said "There! All done!" and it was over.

It feels like an intense period cramp. Take your time getting up  afterwards and bring some cold water with you. You can also ask your health care provider to prescribe you a pill that will soften you cervix which will make the insertion easier. It is recommended that you take the cervix softening pill and schedule your appointment while you are on your period. I did not do either of those things and my insertion still went smoothly but could have been less painful if I had done those things.

The insertion itself was uncomfortable but not necessarily painful. But I was down for the day the cramping was so bad afterwards. I spent 30 minutes in my car in the parking lot of my doc's office, went to work for maybe 2 hours, and then I had to leave. But a minor day of discomfort for 7 years of carefree/effort free/effective birth control. Take some ibuprofen before hand and call in a personal day!!
