Do you talk about race issues in the world with your SO?

Question

It's mainly black issues going on at the moment with the #blacklivesmatter movement mostly in America. Sometimes I bring up things (like if an unarmed black kid gets shot by police and my thoughts on it) with my SO, and he never joins in the conversation or gives his opinion. He usually just say "that's not good". He's white I'm black (from America). I wish he showed more interest in the black community and what's going on. Sometimes I think because he's from another country and police brutality doesn't happen here that he doesn't have an opinion. Just wondering if other people on here have the same problem?

its hard. mine does the same. he doesnt really want to have to conversation. now i just tell him that his child will be black and that he needs to start really thinking on these issues because they will affect our child(ren)

Mine is the same way.  The difference is that I'm white and he is black.  When I bring it up he will say things like "Some people just don't understand," "That's wrong," or "That's horrible."  He does not engage in real conversation about the topic, but I do feel her cares about it deeply. He watches the news every day so he is informed about the issues.  He does not watch online and rarely to never uses social media, so I'm not sure if he knows how passionately others feel.  I think that it might just be his personality type.  He is quiet and calm, where I am the more emotional and outspoken one.

This is actually why I couldn't date a white man. I'm biracial (black and white) and I prefer black men. I'm very pro-black and I just couldn't be with a man who most likely doesn't share my same views and doesn't understand what it's like to be a POC in this country. I grew up in white schools, mainly raised by my white family, aside from my black father. I have gotten in countless arguments with my white grandparents who just don't get it. I can't imagine committing to and living with someone for the rest of my life who isn't aware of the issues in this country faced by anyone who isn't white, Christian, or straight.

My bf is black and I am white and we talk about issues like this often, especially now that we have a son together. Sometimes I don't like talking about it because it's so upsetting to me but it's important to discuss and be aware of the way the world is. I have to be educated because as a white person, I haven't faced a lot of things that my boyfriend has and my son one day will. Talking about hard issues is how we overcome them!

I have the same problem. His family usually just jumps on me whenever I bring up that black lives matter. His mom is always asking me to braid her hair into corn rows (even though I've mentioned I do not know how) I try to find the "humor" in it. But I won't have my kids around people who think Obama is just a "no good n*gger" because they no longer qualify for food stamps. Yes, it's been said in that household.

We do talk about it. But we almost never agree. He still thinks in Black and White and I really don't. He sometimes makes comments like : 90% of white people hate black people and that really pisses me off...

I have the same problem. I try to discuss racism with him, but it often doesn't turn out too well. I think it's even more difficult because he's from Poland, a country where almost everyone is white (in fact, he only met one black person before me), so while racism exists there, it is often overlooked and isn't a huge issue. He thinks that North Americans are too into the concept of race, etc. We can have decent discussions on the history and issue of topics like slavery, but when it comes to modern day racism, sometimes it seems like he just doesn't care or (even try to) understand. Being a black person in a relationship with a white person (or even other non-black people) can be difficult for this reason alone, especially for those of us who are concerned about racism and who are affected by it.

My husbands family all made posters I we stood where it is very busy. Lots of cars and lots of people but we all stood with our BLACKLIVESMATTER signs. We also all went to a march for BLACKLIVESMATTER and are trying to go to another one. My MIL and Husband are very passionate about everything having to do with black lives because we will have a black child. My husband is Korean and Japanese. Asian people also have struggles that we discuss.

I think that's a red flag. Your struggle is his struggle because you two are together and if he isn't joining in that is a serious problem especially if you guys have a kid. Will he also not join in concerning the issues that your kid will face? Wow. Very alarming
