Animals have self control. I think the only thing that distinguishes us from them is our superior way of thinking. At one point in time, all humans - just like animals- only focused on the basic instincts (i.e food, shelter, reproducing, etc.)
Over time humans have begun to form civilizations run by society and seek and develop the desire for more materialistic things- bigger houses, better clothing, faster travel, medical research, etc.- until it came to the point where most of it is a need. That's how we see things. 
I honestly think that if some random ass apocalypse hits us, humans will be forced to tune into their basic instincts only in order to survive. Then there won't be anything to distinguish us anymore.
