Best car seat and what type?

So this question will be a bit longer but I hope you all can help me.
1. What is the best way to research car seats and ratings? Any websites? Your recommended brands?
2. I have been debating the following: I like the idea of a convertible car seat that lasts for a few years but it seems they are all without a handle to carry them and are stuck in the car but being able to take them out seems to be very convenient in those first months. Should I just get a "cheap" infant car seat and then a nicer convertible one or what would you recommend?

We have his car seat now and will purchase a convertible one once he turns 1yr old.

You'll probably want both car seats. We didn't use our convertible until our daughter was about a year old and she still uses it at almost 5 years old. So getting both was worth it. Also you get what you pay for. You're paying for the safety and quality. I found just doing a Google search on top safety picks worked well and then choose from there based on your budget. Also Amazon is great for personal reviews. We did a chicco keyfit infant seat and a britax marathon convertable seat.

My sister advised me to splurge on a convertible car seat because they last a few years. But buying a cheap or used infant car seat (making sure it's in good condition and not expired) to use for the first few months because they like to sleep in there a LOT and you don't want to wake a sleeping baby lol.
