When to start?

When is a good time to start cloth diapering? My baby is 6 weeks old and the poop is very  runny and I've been told to "wait a while" so it's not so messy to clean up the diapers. What is "wait a while"?

I'd like to know this as well. I hear of people waiting until their umbilical cord stump falls off so that's when I was going to start cloth diapering. I unfortunately didn't start cloth diapering my daughter until she was about 6 months because I never took it into consideration but i'm so glad I changed from disposables to cloth :) and i'm excited to cloth my second baby on the way as well

I've been cloth diapering since 2 weeks. As soon as baby was big enough to fit them. No need to wait. Especially if you breastfeed. Breastmilk poop is water soluble so it washes right out without having to pre rinse the diapers.

We started immediately. Newborn poop is water soluble so don't worry about the mess. We've had more mess with disposables.

I'll be using cloth from birth

I'll be using disposables (honest company) during the meconium stage but after that strictly cloth. I found a great deal on newborn prefolds and newborn all in ones at a consignment sale. I got 3 all in ones and 3 prefolds for $15. I wouldn't have bought newborn sizes but a lot of the one size diapers don't fit until 8lbs. My first was 6lbs & 20in long so I wanted to be sure I had them just incase baby #2 is as tiny as older brother.

I'm a FTM but I plan on doing cloth diapers some as soon as baby comes home from hospital. I'm still building my stash but I have a couple of newborn diapers that allow for the stump to be exposed. So, I will use them some and supplement with disposables until stump falls off. That gives me a little time to get used to the cloth diaper routine as well. :)
