It's only painful if it's not done correctly.

Your bf or whoever, has to kind of prep you back there first. It sounds gross, but if you do it this way - it can feel really good. Have him lube up a finger and slowly slide it in and kind of finger your rear end, then have him use two fingers, and then when you're ready, add some more lube, I mean a lot of lube actually, and then let him slide in. At first, it's uncomfortable. But once he gets into a rhythm and you've relaxed, it shouldn't be painful. Idk of it's enjoyable for everyone, but it was enjoyable for me :) granted, I've only done anal when I'm drunk, because I'm most relaxed then.
