How to lose weight the right way?

My boyfriend never wants to leave the house even to check the mail because he's afraid of people staring at him for his weight (he's not heavy, just a bit on the bigger side). He admits that he doesn't live quite a healthy lifestyle either but he doesn't know how to change it. He's tired often and I think it may be because of his diet and exercise choices :/. Is there anything we could do together that could help him reach his goal? Any suggestions?
