Term PROM and fighting antibiotics
I was educated to stay as far away from antibiotics with my father being a surgeon, because hospitals tend to use too liberally, and I did my own research on term prom when I felt water leaking.
Of course it wasn't a thorough research and I consulted my father's Obgyn colleagues before I arrived at the hospital--antibiotics are not a must for term prom and less ve(viganl exam) the less the chance of infection, and they were aware of my conditions that nothing suggested hightened possibility of infection.
But the nurses routinely put their fingers in me on arrival and tried to hook me on antibiotics. When I fought back, they treated me like a unreasonable maniac. I asked for a doctor and the doctor on duty was also the same. "This is how we do it."
Aaarg. I was almost ready to get back in the car to get to the 2-hour away hospital where I knew I could reason. But because of the first VE my water broke almost completely and contraction kicked in.
Nurses and the doctor on duty made threats for 8 hours of labor that I may be infected, my girl may be infected and that she may have to get on antibiotics afterall after birth. And I ended up getting 4 VEs. 2 at least were very unnecessary. So routine.
It was very uncomfortable having to make decision on my own without any support from the medical service. But I did fine and she is also fine. She did not need to get on antibiotics without any signs of infection.
It's important to listen to doctor's opinions but I also believe in making an educated, balanced decision that is not based on a single expert's opinion. Consult a different doctor and google and read new, scientific researches from trustworthy sources, because some doctors simply don't update. Hope every mother does the same and finds the courage to say no or change hospitals or doctors if they don't feel comfortable.
I'm still sorry that I stayed with this hospital because they took my baby away for "monitoring" because she wasnt given antibiotics, fed her formula, and is not returning her to me yet.
