Can anyone help me dissect the song? I know it's about homosexuality and how it's not accepted in the church, but I know there's more to the song than just that. I love the lyrics and can't put a finger on why it's so moving and beautiful to me! And I do consider it controversial because the theme of the song 😛

The song itself *is not* about homosexuality, if you care to look up the lyrics. The music video does focus on a gay couple, which was chosen because Hozier didn't want to make a video directly attacking the church and it's corruption, according to a interview, so he went with something that feel similar in the sense that love is real/people are being attacked for their views.

In the lyrics he's talking about seeking comfort in a woman and worshiping her because he feels closer to her than God. Thus he does so via sex or doing anything else for her. My opinion: It's a song about losing faith in God/corrupt church and being lured into sin, primal urges, etc. I listen to the song often as I have pecattiphilia, so I enjoy this kind of music.

Yeah I was always confused by the song, people saying it's about homosexuality yet he says "she" in the song...????

All I know is that I love that song lol although I prefer a cover I heard on The Voice so that's the version I have on my phone
