I would definitely wait to tell friends and family!

I would go ahead and announce it publically. Then if they steal the name you have already announced it and can name your baby that anyways. They will look like the a hole. As long as it's not an immediate family member I wouldn't even care. There are very few few truly unique names out there, surely you share yours with someone:)
