Too poor to have a baby?
I know this topic has been discussed before. I am 31 husband is 33. We both work full time in nonprofit. We both like our jobs. We live normal lives mortgage, food, 1 car, phone bill, utilities etc.
We both have huge student loan burdens that we have to pay for the next decade. Well I'm 4 years into loan forgiveness and he is 2 years in. I am also paying back medical bills from a illness when I was in between jobs and right before Obamacare passed, darn. 1.5 more years left to pay on that.
We will not have any help with a baby. We will have to pay for childcare. Factoring in the slightly reduced student loan bill because our family size will increase to 3 if we have a baby. After paying all our bills and paying for childcare and the added person on the insurance. We will have $300 left a month not allocated to bills.
That makes me very very nervous. We don't want to wait too much longer to start a family and our finances are not likely to change anytime soon.
We have been saving but that $$ will be eaten up if I don't go back to work immediately. And some of it was recently eaten up on costly but necessary home repairs. My job doesn't provide any paid maternity leave. I will use accumulated sick and vacation leave.
We want to start trying soon but I feel selfish to bring a child into such a bleak financial situation. Has anyone else started a family knowing your finances are less than ideal. Or did you decide to wait?
As an aside my husband loves his job but is applying to better paying jobs for the $$.
