Epidural for c-section?

Question for all of you ladies that had a c-section with an epidural. I can not get a spinal block for medical reasons but my doc is ok with me doing a epidural. How long until I can get up and move around and feel things. When can I get the cathader removed? Also pain management I have never taken a pain pill or taken anything stronger than ibuprofen, I'm nervous of effects from pain meds.

I had a c section, my baby was delivered at 4:45 pm I was up and walking around by 9 that night. The epidural was the only option given to me, it wasn't awful I was just mad about how long it took to wear off. As for pain management, you're going to want to take the pain meds they offer you. And that's coming from someone with a super high pain tolerance. I labored for over 48 hours with no pain meds, I made it to 8cm naturally before I had an emergency c section. The pain meds they give you are a life saver.

They wanted me to stay in bed for 12 hours after my c-section before getting up and the nurse and my husband were with me when I got up the first time. I was able to move my legs long before the 12 hours were up though. They took my catheter out within that 12 hours. I had never taken anything besides Tylenol and ibuprofen before my c-section. Tgey gave me one side of morphine right after they pulled her out, so I slept while they sewed me up. Then I had two dose of tramadol IV, which is like ibuprofen on steroids. They gave me Vicodin to take  by mouth after my IV was removed, which made me loopy for about 30 min when it kicked in for the first few doses, then it stopped. It takes care of the pain. I take one when I need it, but no more loopy feeling.

I didn't have a spinal for my c-section and didn't feel a thing.  As far as pain meds go, what I was given didn't impair me at all.  Good luck

I was more effected by the morphine than the epi. But I could move my legs a bit within an hour or so after the c section and probably could have gotten up that night. But since the morphine was hitting me hard, I stayed in bed for 24 hours. But the next morning i got up and out of bed. Once they saw that I could walk ok, they took the catheter out.

I just had a c-section on March 17, I did have a spinal so a little different in that regard but I had surgery at 7:30am and they took the catheter out at 5am the next morning. They told me they like to wait at least 18 hours and then they let me sleep a little longer instead of taking it out in the middle of the night. I was up walking that same day, however my first three attempts I threw up due to feeling sick from the dilaudid (spelling?) they gave me in my IV. After the IV was out I was just on 600mg ibuprofen and had the choice of something stronger if need be but only took a few as I didn't feel I really needed them. I can honestly say getting up and moving as soon as possible I think made all the difference in my recovery. Good luck to you, I'm sure you'll do great!

After my c-section the epidural took a couple of hours to completely wear off. Then they took the catheter out. They got me up and walking around the next day. Which feels weird at first as I was too scared to straighten my body up but it was ok. You just have to move slowly. Sitting down on the toilet was abit difficult but as long as you take your time it's ok x

Everyone is different so I can only give you my experience. I have acute scoliosis so my epidural experience kinda sucked. They had to try to put it in 3 times before they could get it right because of the shape of my spine. Once they did the numbness was immediate in certain places. I would say it took about 10 minutes for my whole body to feel numb. They put in a catheter and I was good to go.  The ONLY thing I felt at all was them taking the baby out, moving stuff around and stapling back up. I feel ANY pain during whatsoever. It just pressure like a tugging. I think they kept the epidural in for one more day. Took out the catheter at the end, which I barely felt at all. I will say once the epidural wears off, it doesn't feel great. It's not unbearable though. You're not going to WANT to move much after it wears off, but you HAVE to. It's the only way to heal faster. Get those muscles working again. The nurses(if they are good ones) will make you get up and walk around. The next healing highly depends on how much you moved around. If you did, then the actual pain should lessen greatly within a couple days. After that it's just sore for a couple weeks. I only had one issue with the aftermath of my epidural, which was that the left side of my upper back lost feeling in it for a couple years. Like you could stab me with a fork and I barely felt anything. It all came back though eventually.
