Ok first off if a guy starts talking sexy before even getting to know you, don't bother replying. (unless that's what you're after)
I liked to talk for a few days and then meet the guy as soon as I could, cause it's easier to tell if he's honest in person.
Make sure you don't tell him where you live or work, and meet someplace public when you find a guy with potential. 
Try to make your profile positive and include plenty of stuff about your interests, plus if there's anything really important make sure to mention it in there. :)

So, I was 19 when I started online dating. It was through a dating site. I never thought I'd try it, but I live in a small town that's 3-4 hours from any major city, and here in my town, there's not a lot of choices. Here's what I learned: Only do what's comfortable for you. I talked to this guy for a while. He was nice at first, looking long term, but there were some things that weren't adding up. It got uncomfortable, he tried to tell me he loved me after a week of chatting, and then when I broke off communication, he continued trying to contact me. He stopped, but I was very apprehensive after that. Less than a month later, I met my husband. We went slow at first, stayed very friendly, and then let things progress naturally. We were long distance for 6 months (he lived 2,000 miles away). He came to visit me, and soon after moved to my area. We are happily married and expecting our first baby.

Moral of the story: if it feels fishy, it probably is. Good judgement, good boundaries, and everything should be fine.
