If pedophila is a mental illness then why are pedos sent to jail and not psychiatric institutions?

They would put a schizophrenic murderer in an institution so why is it any different with this? If it's a mental illness then wouldn't they lack the mens rea? Where do you draw the line?

Alrighty. First up, schizophrenic people are more likely to hurt themselves than other people. Please make this clear, because the stigma around schizophrenia being horrible and wanting to hurt others is ridiculous.

Um, they don't always send a schizophrenic murderer to an institution. More often than not, they are sent to prison. Look at Jeffery Dahmer. A person has to be found competent to stand trial in order to be found guilty and sentenced to any jail or prison time. While pedophilia is a mental illness (it's in the DSM-V) most pedophiles are competent to stand trial. They weren't "insane" when they committed their crimes.

Becuase even those perophila is a mental illness they still no what's wrong or right. It's more that been a oedophile is like been gay or straight they dnt use choose to be attracted to children but if they choose to act on this that makes them a criminal and some act upon these in obscene ways hence why they deserve to go to prison but you'll actually find a lot of peadophiles do go to mental hospitals also depending on the crime they have committed. Schizophrenia is in no way the same as been a paedophile peadophiles know what they are doing schizophrenics do not know what they a ee doing
