What comes first your water breaking or having contractions? When do you go to the hospital

My water has never broke on its own

My water broke first, but apparently it didn't break all the way because the next day when I went to the hospital they rebroke it again to ramp up labor. I was having contractions but was progressing very slowly. Also my midwife advised going to the hospital within a few hr of the water breaking to help prevent infection.....although I continued to labor for 3 days after my water broke 😳

I was told with my first pregnancy (in birthing class) to labor at home until contractions get close together, unless your water breaks. Water breaking means you are more prone to infection. Though all hospitals can have different policies. You could always call the hospital and get their policy info. I always thought it would be AWFUL to be in labor, but not far enough along and be sent home. I ended up having a c-section so I didn't ever experience labor so I'm not really speaking from experience.

It can happen either way around, every pregnancy can be different. 
We've been told to call the hospital when things start, even if it's very early stages, so they can plan ahead. They'll let you know when they want you to come in, but you can always go in earlier if you're worried.

I was one of the rare cases last time where I had no contractions at all but my water broke! Like in the movies.. I thought I was peeing the bed but realized when it wouldn't stop that it was my water. I went in to the hospital about an hour after and had very light contractions at that point. I'm hoping this time my water doesn't break first because I was dying by about 4cm

Either can come first. You go to the hospital when you are contracting every 5 mins. You'll get mixed answers on when to go in of your water breaks but you're not contracting yet (at term).
