Bladder infection 31 weeks - possible GBS?

Question

I was just told I have a bladder infection and need to go on antibiotics to treat it. I have no real symptoms which I guess is common. The urine test was strictly for bladder infections but my midwife was explaining that when you get a uti in pregnancy the likelihood of Group strep b is higher and that I'm likely positive for it - (I may however misunderstood). In any event I can still do the swab at 36 weeks to either confirm I have it or hopefully that I don't have it.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this? A UTI this late in pregnancy that lead to GBS positive results?

FTM and obviously worried by the news.

I've never heard of that before. With my first I had GBS but no UTIs and with my second I had many UTIs (all treated w/o antibiotics - just used cranberry and d mannose capsules) and was not GBS positive. Of course that's just anecdotal. :) Good luck!

Most UTIs are E.coli not group B strep. I'm not sure where the link she's talking about would come from.

If your urine culture grows group B strep, we consider you colonized and will give prophylaxis in labor. If the culture is not GBS, but another organism, you are screened like everybody else around 36 weeks.

That actually just happend to me. I was kind of pissed about it because I knew I had a uti because of the way it felt and they wouldn't give me antibiotics because my culture was negative. Two weeks later my uti is so bad that group b strep colonized my bladder and now I'm positive  and will have to have antibiotics during birth.

I also at 30 weeks was diagnosed with bladder infection and was put on meds to get rid of it. Had to go back the following week and a half to get retested to see if the infection is gone. Get the results tomorrow. But he didn't say anything to be about GBS. With my first I had current Utis and had to take meds 24-7 and still pasted the swab test. With this pregnancy I've only had one bladder infection.
